Making the second layer of planking/
Влаштування другого шару обшивки
The second layer of planks or the finish layer (if the kit includes only one layer of planks) - is a very important step, because it is 50% of the beauty of the model. Therefore, it requires careful preparation to avoid mistakes. That is why I prefer white glue (PVA) because this glue allows you to correct mistakes, unlike CA, which is not reversible.
"Where to start planking?" This is the question I hear most often! On real ships, the master shipwright began from the garboard strake next to the keel and moved up. But on a model it does not matter where one starts the planking: from the garboard upwards or from the wales downwards. An exception would be clinker-built hulls, which can only be built one way.
Другий шар дощок або чистова обшивка (якщо комплектом передбачено усього один шар дощок) - є дуже відповідальним етапом, бо складає 50% краси моделі. Тому потребує ретельної підготовки, щоб уникнути помилок. Саме тому я надаю перевагу білому клею (ПВА) бо цей клей дає можливість виправити помилки на відміну від СА який не є зворотнім.
"З відки почати обшивати?" Це питання я чую найчастіше! На справжніх кораблях майстри починали з першого ряду (шпунтового поясу) від кіля і рухались угору. Але на моделі - це не важливо, якщо корпус буде повністю зашитим. Хіба що якщо модель має клінкерну обшивку і технологічно виконати її можливо лише починаючи від кіля...
5.1. Calculation of the number of strakes and the width of the planks:
- find the midship frame, which is usually located in the central part of the keel - the length of its curve will be measured to determine the number of strakes (max);
- determine the location of the shortest frame (min);
- if in a stern part the frame is longer than amidships then it is necessary to consider stealers;
- also drop planks in the bow may be needed;
- for accuracy, you can add a few more control measurements of additional frames;
- move on to the next step.
5.1. Розрахунок кількості поясів та ширини дощок:
- знайдіть мідель шпангоут, який зазвичай розташований в центральній частині кіля - довжина його кривої і буде розрахунковою для визначення кількості поясів обшивки (max);
- визначіть місце розташування найкоротшого шпангоуту (min);
- якщо в кормовій частині розташований шпангоут довший за мідель, тоді треба врахувати додаткове вствновлення викрадачів;
- також можливий варіант з скиданням планки у носовій частині;
- для точності можна додати ще кілька замірів на контрольних шпангоутах;
- переходимо до наступного пункту.
Advice/Порада:
To accurately measure the width of the planks in the kit, it is better to measure 10 pieces at once./Щоб точно виміряти ширину планок в комплекті, краще заміряти 10 шт одразу.
5. 2. To control the process of laying planks, you should mark the hull:
- If the hull has the first layer of planking - marking the plank widths on the hull and move to the following step;
- If the hull has only one layer of planks, mark the frames or bulkheads and proceed to the next step.

5. 2. Щоб контродлювати процес укладання дощок, слід нанесення розбивку на корпус:
- Якщо корпус має перший шар обшивки - нанесіть розмітку на неї і переходьте до наступного кроку;
- Якщо корпус має лише один шар дощок, нанесіть розмітку на шпангоути чи перебірки і переходьте до настпуного кроку.
5. 3. To make a perfect planking without damaging the planks, you need to make clamps based on thickness and width of the planks, so I advise you to make them individually for each model:
5.3.1. Can be made from hardwood using power tools;
5.3.2. From leftovers and scraps from the kit (this option is used on HMS PEGASUS);
5.3.3. Use thumb tacks;
- Prepare your version of the clamps and move on to the next step.
Advice/Порада:
You can make the clamps for the planks yourself or use the thumb tacks . /Затискачі для планок ви можете виготовити самостійно або використати канцелярські кнопки.
5. 3. Щоб зробити аккуратну обшивку не пошкодивши планки, потрібно виготовити затискачі з урахуванням товщини та ширини тому я раджу робити їх індивідуаотно для кожної моделі:
5.3.1. Можна виготовити з більш твердої породи дерева з використанням станків;
5.3.2. З залишків і обрізків з комплекту (цей варіант застосоаний на HMS PEGASUS);
5.3.3. Скористатися вже готовими канцелярськими кнопками;
- Підготуйте ваш варіант затискачів і переходьте до наступного пункту.
5.4. Narrowing of the planks. How to determine the start of narrowing?
- place the plank to the previous strake and determine the point where the gap is widest;
- mark the points of intersection between the plank and the frames;
- Narrow the plank according to the marks and continue planking.
5.4. Звуження дощок. Як визначити місце початку звуження?
- Прикладіть планку до встановленого попередньо ряду та визначіть найширше місце щілини що утворилася;
- Якщо планка перетинає шпангоути що мають розмітку, перенесіть розмір на планку;
- Звузьте по отриманим відміткам планку та продовжуйте влаштовувати обшивку.

5.5. How to determine the place for drop planks?
- When the plank starts to turn around and refuses to fit even after steaming, then it's time to cut it in the place where it no longer lies fair;
- The next strake of planks should be adjusted from the place of the drop plank;
- Sometimes it is enough to make one drop plank, but on different models there may be more;
- Continue planking.
Advice/Порада:
To make the planks more elastic, they must be steamed. It can be done with an electric bender or or boil them. /Щоб планки були більш еластичними їх треба розпарити. Їх можна прокипятити або використовувати електрозгинач.
5.5. Як визначити місце для скидання ряду дощок?
- Коли дошка починає вивертатися і відмовлятися прилягати навіть після розпарювання, тоді час її обрізати, як раз у тому місці де найбільше відтопирюється;
- Наступний ряд дощок слід починати підганяти з місця обрізаної дошки;
- Іноді достатньо і одного разу скинути ряд, але на різних моделях їх може бути більше;
- Продовжуйте обшивку.
5.6. How to determine the place for the stealer?
In contrast to the bow, in the stern comes a moment when the plank does not take the shape of the hull and it is necessary to add a strake.
- Determine the location for this stealer;
- The next strake of planks should be adjust from the stealer;
- There may be several stealers;
- Continue planking.
Advice/Порада: For a perfect cut of the stealers and drop planks, use only new sharp blades. / Для ідеального вирізання викрадачів та скинутих планок, використовуйте тільки нові гострі леза.
5.6. Як визначити місце для викрадача?
Так само як і у носовій частині корпусу, у кормовій теж настає момент коли дошка не приймає форму корпусу і вивертається, тому і виникає необхідність влаштувати додатковий шматок.
- Визначте місце для встановлення викрадача;
- Наступний ряд дощок слід починати підганяти з місця встановлення викрадача;
- Викрадачів так само може бути кілька;
- Продовжуйте обшивку.
5.7. Additional marking of the hull. Somewhere about 1/3 to the end of the planking, you need to re-mark the hull as described in paragraph 5.1. Most likely, you will have to narrow the planks not only in the bow, but also on the shortest frame. And from the shortest frame, the planks can again expand to the stern.
- Determine the location of the longest and shortest frame and make a new marking;
- Arrange the rest of the planks, forming them clearly according to the obtained dimensions and go to the next step.
5.7. Додаткова розбивка корпусу. Десь приблизно на 1/3 до кінця обшивки, потрібно знову розмітити корпус як описано в пункті 5.1. Найімовірніше вам доведеться звужувати тошку не лише у носовій частині, а і на найкоротшому шпангоуті. І від найкоротшого шпангоуту планки знову можуть розширюватися до ахтерштевня.
- Визначіть розташування найдовшого і найкоротшого шпангоуту і зробіть нову розбивку;
- Влаштуйте решту планок формуючи їх чітко за отриманими розмірами та переходьте до наступного пункту.
5.8. Completion of the second layer of planking:
- Sand the planking and if the backbone is already installed - go to the next chapter;
- Trim all excess planks;
- Cut into the hull of the model for the stem and stern (do not forget about means of protection when working with power tools);
- Go to the next chapter.
5.8. Завершення улаштування чистової обшивки:
- Відшліфуйте обшивку та якщо частини кіля, форштевня та ахтерштевня вдже встановлені моделі - переходьте до наступного розділу;
- Підріжте всі надлишки дощок;
- Вріжте форштевень та ахтерштевень (не забувайте про засоби захисту при роботі з електроінструментом);
- Переходьте до наступного розділу.
