Installing the Rudder/Встановлення пера Руля
Usually the rudder in the KITs is provided already cut to basic shape. It must be marked and narrowed to the correct shape. Also, very often in the kits you can find cast or photo-etched pintles and gudgeons, which are often simplified and only imitate the real thing. Therefore, in this chapter I will show by example HMS PEGASUS how to make pintles and gudgeons to install a "functioning" rudder...
Зазвичай стерно в комплектах вже вирізане у вигляді базової форми. Його необхідно розмітити і звузити до правильної форми. Також дуже часто в комплектах ви можете знайти литі або фототравлені петлі і навіси, які зачасту спрощені і лише імітують справжні. Тому і цьому розділі я покажу на прикладі HMS PEGASUS як самостійно виготовити петлі та цвяхи для істановлення "функціонуючого" пера руля...
7.1. Making the pintles and gudgeons:
As a KIT with HMS PEGASUS at a scale of 1:64, the pintles and gudgeons have absolutely nothing in common with the real ones, they are better made of scratch from brass or copper with a thickness of 0.1 mm (0.004 ").
- Cut strips of metal 2 mm wide;
- Cut a tube with an inner diameter of 0.9 mm;
- Cut pins for pintles of wire with a diameter of 0.8 mm;
- Start bending futurepintles and gudgeons under the tubes, it is convenient to do on a drill clamped in a vise;
- Solder the tubes in the bent blanks of the pintles and gudgeons. This can be done both with regular solder or with silver paste;
- Sand the excess solder on the blanks of the rudder feather hinges.

Advice/Порада:
For different scales of models it is necessary to have a stock of different thicknesses and diameters of copper and brass./Для різних масштабів моделей варто мати запас різних товщин та діаметрів міді та латуні.

7.1. Виготовлення петель пера руля:
Так як у комплекті HMS PEGASUS в масштабі 1:64 петлі абсолютно не мають нічого спільного з реальними, їх краще виготовлені самостійно з латуні або міді товщиною 0,1 мм (0,004").
- Нарізати смужки металу шириною 2 мм;
- Нарізати трубочку з внутрішнім діаметром 0,9 мм;
- Нарізати шпильки для петель з проволоки діаметром 0,8 мм;
- Почати згинати майбутні петлі під шпильки, це зручно зробити на сверлі затиснутому в лещатах;
- Припаяти трубочки в зігнутих заготовках петель. Це можна зробити як звичайним припоєм так і за допомогою срібної пасти;
- Відшліфуйте зайвий припій на заготовках петель пера руля.
7. 2. Preparation of pintles and gudgeons:
- If the rudder has a copper sheathing, then it's time to arrange it similarly to the technology from the chapter 6, if not - go to the next step;
- Mark the dimensions of each pintles and gudgeons and drill holes for nails (for example, HMS PEGASUS drilling is made with a 0.5 mm drill);
- Bend each pintles and gudgeons according to the shape of the hull;
- Cut nails to install the pintles and gudgeons (in this example - from 0.45 mm wire).

7. 2. Підготовка петель руля:
- Якщо перо руля має мідну обшивку, то саме час влаштувати її аналогчно за технологіїєю з 6го розділу, якщо ні - переходьте до наступного пункту;
- Розмітьте розміри кожної петлі і просверліть отвори під цівяхи (на прикладі HMS PEGASUS сверління виконане свердлом 0,5мм);
- Зігніть кожну петлю у відповідності до форми корпусу;
- Наріжте цвяхів для встановлення петель ( в цьому прикладі - з проволоки 0,45мм).
7.3. Installing the pintles and gudgeons:
- Use Bras Black or similar chemicals to blacken pintles and gudgeons and nails;
- Install the pintles with gudgeons on the rudder, fixing each nail with CA glue.
7.3. Встановлення петель:
- За допомогою Bras Black чи подібної хімії почорніть петлі та цвяхи;
- Встановіть петлі на стерно фіксуючи кожен цвях СА клеєм.
7.4. Installing the rudder:
- Secure the rudder with clamps;
- Alternately left and right, carefully drill the hull through the holes in the gudgeons and install the nails.
7.4. Встановлення пера руля:
- Зафіксуйте стерно за допомогою струбцин;
- Почергово зліва та справа починайте обережно сверлити корпус через отвори в петлях та встановлювати цівяхи.
7.5. Installing the model on the stand:
It's time to install the model on the stand to protect the rudder from accidental damage or scratches on the copper plating. In the kits you can often see a stand on a keel blocks. And for more demanding modelers - you can make an elegant stand on pedestals.
- Prepare a stand from the kit. If you plan to use it - stick strips of felt on its edges to protect the hull of the model from scratches.
- Make your own stand and install the model.
7.5. Встановлення моделі на підставку:
Саме час встановити модель на підставку, щоб захистити перо руля від випадкового пошкодження чи подряпин на мідній обшивці. В комплектах дуже часто можна побачити підставку на кіль блоках. А для більш вибагливих моделістів - можна зробити витончену підстаку на шпильках.
- Підготуйте підствку з комплекту. Якщо ви плануєте її використовувати - приклеїте на її торці смужки з фетру щоб захистити корпус моделі від подряпин.
- Виготовте власну підставку і встановіть модель.
